Product overview & application
What is olivine blasting grit?
Since 1974 the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that materials containing more than one percent free silica should not be used for abrasive blasting, because the silica dust is hazardous to workers. Pas Espadana produces and supplies olivine blasting grit as an alternative to silica sand.
Advantages over silica sand
- No free silica, safer for workers
- Higher hardness (about 6.5 Mohs) and several reuse cycles
- Higher specific gravity (about 3.2 g/cm³): particles hit the surface with more energy for faster blasting
- Lower material consumption and overall process cost

Applications
- Blasting of metal surfaces before painting and coating
- Replacement for silica sand in abrasive blasting
